Which ISO Certificate Is Most Recognised in Malaysia?

Published 3 min read

Short answer: the most recognised ISO certificate in Malaysia comes from a certification body accredited by Standards Malaysia, or by an overseas accreditation body in the same international agreements (IAF MLA, and in Asia Pacific the APAC MRA). The brand on the certificate matters less than that line of accreditation.

Two layers people mix up

BSI, SIRIM QAS, LRQA, DNV, Bureau Veritas and TÜV are certification bodies: they audit you. Standards Malaysia, UKAS and their peers are accreditation bodies: they audit the auditors. A certificate is only as strong as the accreditation behind the certification body.

These accreditation marks are common on certificates held by Malaysian companies. All are IAF MLA signatories (member list):

Accreditation bodyCountry
Standards MalaysiaMalaysia
UKASUnited Kingdom
RvANetherlands
JABJapan
ANAB and IASUnited States
JAS-ANZAustralia and New Zealand
DAkkSGermany

Every one of them is recognised in Malaysia in the same way. Some customers and tenders still name the one they want, so check their requirement.

A name that sounds international proves nothing either way. IAS, for example, is a full IAF member. Check the list, not the name.

Standards Malaysia's recognised scopes

From Standards Malaysia:

ScopeIAF MLAAPAC MRA
ISO 9001, 14001, 27001, 22000, 13485, 45001YesYes
ISO 37001 anti-briberyNot listedYes, since June 2023
ISO 22301 business continuityNot listedYes, since May 2024

For ISO 37001, look for the APAC scope. A CB without anti-bribery accreditation can still print an ISO 37001 certificate.

Why the grey area exists

There are no villains in this story, only three forces that pull the same way.

  1. The buyer wants it fast and cheap. A quote half the market price usually means fewer audit days.
  2. Fewer audit days mean a thinner sample. A good auditor with one day can only see what one day allows. The audit feels easy, and everyone is pleased.
  3. Nobody watches the watcher. Outside the IAF and APAC system, no accreditation body sits in on audits or reviews the files.

Signs you are there: the accreditor is not on the IAF or APAC lists, it shares owners with the CB, the certificate arrives in days with a "guaranteed pass", or the same company writes your documents and issues the certificate.

An easy audit feels like a win on audit day. It turns into a loss on the day your customer audits you.

Your boss happy, or your customer happy?

A certificate makes the boss happy. It hangs in the lobby and goes into the tender file. Your customer does not audit the lobby. They audit your line, your records and your last complaint, often with little notice.

Only you know whether your ISO system is a three-day system: built before the audit, forgotten after it. Even a fully accredited certificate cannot hide that for long.

The most recognised certificate in Malaysia is an accredited one. The most valuable one is backed by a system that works on an ordinary Tuesday.

FAQ

Is SIRIM the only recognised certification body in Malaysia? No. Any certification body accredited by Standards Malaysia, or by another IAF MLA or APAC MRA signatory for that standard, is recognised.

Is BSI an accreditation body? No. BSI is a certification body. Its certificates are recognised through the accreditation behind them, for example UKAS.
