Information securityISO/IEC 27001:2022

Turn scattered IT policies into an audited information security management system that customers and regulators both trust.

What it is

ISO/IEC 27001:2022 is the international standard for an information security management system, or ISMS. It requires an organisation to assess information security risk, select controls from the 93 controls listed in Annex A, and document why each is or is not applied in a Statement of Applicability. Certification follows a two-stage audit by an accredited body. In Malaysia it complements, but does not replace, obligations under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, and increasingly sits alongside guidance from NACSA and the Cyber Security Act 2024 for organisations designated as critical national information infrastructure.

Who needs it in Malaysia

IT and BPO companies bidding for enterprise clients
Enterprise procurement and vendor risk assessments now routinely require ISO 27001 as a condition of the contract, especially for companies handling customer data, payment information, or hosted infrastructure.
Companies handling personal data under the PDPA
Businesses processing customer or employee personal data use ISO 27001's risk-based controls to operationalise Personal Data Protection Act 2010 obligations, turning a legal duty into an auditable, repeatable system.
Sectors touched by the Cyber Security Act 2024
Organisations operating in sectors designated as critical national information infrastructure, or that work with agencies guided by NACSA, use ISO 27001 as the recognised framework to demonstrate a mature security posture.
SaaS and fintech companies selling into regulated markets
Software and financial technology companies use ISO 27001 to satisfy the security questionnaires that banks, insurers, and regulated enterprise customers require before signing a contract or granting data access.

Our process

  1. Risk assessment and Annex A control selection

We run the risk assessment clause 6.1.2 requires, then select and justify controls from Annex A's 93 controls, documenting inclusions and exclusions in the Statement of Applicability the certification body will review.

  2. Policies and documentation for selected controls

Information security policy, access control, incident response, and other procedures are drafted around the controls you actually selected, not the full 93, keeping documentation proportionate to your real risk.

  3. Implementation and PDPA alignment

We implement the selected controls and map them explicitly to your Personal Data Protection Act 2010 obligations, so one system answers both the ISO certificate and the statutory data protection duty.

  4. Internal audit and management review

A full rehearsal covering clause 9.2 and clause 9.3, closing findings and compiling incident logs, vulnerability results, and control performance for the management review the standard requires.

  5. Certification audit support

We accompany you through Stage 1 document review of your Statement of Applicability and risk treatment plan, and Stage 2 evidence review, helping close findings before the certificate is issued.

Timeline

A single-office company with reasonable existing IT policies typically reaches certification in four to seven months from gap analysis. Companies with multiple systems, cloud providers, or no documented risk assessment can take up to nine months, since incident and access logs need to accumulate evidence across a full internal audit cycle before Stage 2. Organisations under Cyber Security Act 2024 designation should plan for additional review time to align with sector-specific guidance.

What affects the cost

  • Number of systems, applications, and sites within the ISMS scope
  • Existing IT security documentation and control maturity
  • Number of Annex A controls applicable given your risk assessment
  • Certification body fees, which scale with scope and number of locations
  • Scope of staff security awareness and incident response training
  • Whether penetration testing or vulnerability scanning is already contracted

How BUKTI helps

  • BUKTI keeps your Statement of Applicability and risk treatment plan current against clause 6.1.3, so control justifications never go stale between audits.
  • Security incidents and corrective actions run through BUKTI's CAPA workflow mapped to clause 10.1, with root cause and closure evidence tracked automatically for both the certification body and internal reporting.
  • Management review inputs required by clause 9.3, including incident trends and control performance, are compiled in BUKTI so reviews start with organised data.

FAQ

Does ISO 27001 mean we comply with the PDPA?

ISO 27001 is a strong operational foundation for Personal Data Protection Act 2010 compliance, since its risk assessment and controls cover much of what the PDPA expects for data security. It is not a legal exemption, though, and PDPA-specific duties like consent and data subject requests still need separate procedures we build alongside the ISMS.

What is a Statement of Applicability?

It is a required document listing all 93 Annex A controls and stating whether each is applied, with a justification, and a reference to how it is implemented. Auditors treat it as the map of your ISMS, so we build it carefully during gap analysis rather than as an afterthought.

How much does ISO 27001 certification cost in Malaysia?

Cost depends on the number of systems, applications, and sites in scope, and how mature your existing security controls are. Certification body fees are quoted separately from consulting fees. We provide a written, fixed-scope quote after reviewing your environment.

How long does ISO 27001 implementation take?

Four to seven months is typical for a single-office company with reasonable existing policies. Organisations with multiple systems, cloud providers, or no prior risk assessment need longer, since evidence must accumulate across a full internal audit cycle.

Do we need to implement all 93 Annex A controls?

No. You select and justify only the controls relevant to your risk assessment in the Statement of Applicability, excluding others with a documented reason. Most SMEs apply a meaningful subset rather than all 93, keeping the system proportionate to actual risk.

How does ISO 27001 relate to NACSA and the Cyber Security Act 2024?

NACSA coordinates national cybersecurity policy, and the Cyber Security Act 2024 imposes duties on organisations designated as critical national information infrastructure. ISO 27001 is not a legal substitute for those duties, but it is widely accepted as evidence of a mature security management system when demonstrating compliance to sector regulators.
