Recycled content certificationGRS 4.0

Prove the recycled percentage on your label with a certified chain of custody, not a supplier's word.

What it is

The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) 4.0, owned by Textile Exchange, is an international certification for products containing recycled material, verifying recycled content and tracking it through chain of custody from source to final product. It applies beyond textiles to plastics and packaging, and covers social, environmental, and chemical criteria alongside content verification, certified through annual audits by an accredited body. Every organisation that takes ownership of GRS-labelled material, from recycler to final seller, must hold its own GRS certificate and issue transaction certificates down the chain.

Who needs it in Malaysia

Textile and apparel manufacturers using recycled fibre
Spinners, weavers, and garment makers using recycled polyester, cotton, or other recycled fibre need GRS certification to make a verifiable recycled-content claim, since brands increasingly require it rather than accepting a supplier's self-declared percentage.
Plastics and packaging producers using recycled resin
Manufacturers of recycled PET bottles, packaging film, or moulded plastic products pursue GRS to certify recycled content claims to retail and FMCG customers, particularly where sustainability packaging targets specify GRS rather than a generic recycled claim.
Traders and converters in the recycled material chain
Any organisation that buys, processes, or resells GRS-certified material, including converters, traders, and distributors, must hold its own certification to keep the chain of custody intact; a single uncertified link breaks the claim for everyone downstream.
Brands and exporters facing recycled-content buyer requirements
Exporters selling into markets or to brands with recycled-content sourcing commitments need GRS-certified suppliers throughout their chain, since the standard's transaction certificates are what a buyer's compliance team actually checks.

Our process

  1. Gap analysis against GRS 4.0 requirements

We assess your recycled material sourcing, chain of custody records, and existing environmental and social practices against the standard's content, social, environmental, and chemical criteria, and hand over a dated, written action list.

  2. Recycled content verification and mass balance

We help you document the recycled input verification and mass balance calculations the standard requires, tracing recycled material from source claim through your production process to the labelled output.

  3. Chain of custody and transaction certificate system

Procedures for issuing and receiving transaction certificates are set up so recycled content claims stay verifiable from your supplier through to your customer, with records an auditor can trace end to end.

  4. Social, environmental, and chemical criteria documentation

Social compliance, environmental management, and restricted substance list requirements are documented against your actual facility, closing gaps before the certification audit rather than during it.

  5. Certification audit support

We accompany you through the on-site audit and transaction certificate review, helping you demonstrate a traceable chain of custody in the language the certification body expects.

Timeline

A single-site manufacturer with existing recycled material sourcing and basic records typically reaches GRS certification in three to five months from gap analysis. Companies building chain of custody documentation from scratch, or coordinating certification across multiple supply chain partners, often need six to nine months.

What affects the cost

  • Number of recycled material types and production sites within scope
  • Existing chain of custody and transaction certificate documentation
  • Whether upstream suppliers are already GRS certified
  • Certification body fees, which scale with site size and product scope
  • Scope of social and environmental compliance work needed
  • Laboratory testing needed to verify recycled content or restricted substances

How BUKTI helps

  • BUKTI keeps your transaction certificates and mass balance records current, so a broken chain of custody is never the finding an auditor raises.
  • Nonconformances and corrective actions run through BUKTI's CAPA workflow, with root cause and closure evidence tracked automatically across sites.
  • Management review inputs, from recycled content volumes to supplier certification status, are compiled in BUKTI so the meeting starts with organised data.

FAQ

What is a transaction certificate and why do we need one?

A transaction certificate is issued by a certification body each time GRS-certified material changes hands, confirming the recycled content claim and quantity transferred. Without one, the next buyer in the chain cannot verify or pass on the recycled content claim, breaking the chain of custody.

Do all our suppliers need to be GRS certified too?

Yes, every organisation that takes ownership of the material from the recycled input stage through to your labelled product needs its own GRS certification. A single uncertified link in the chain means the recycled content claim cannot be verified.

What is the difference between GRS and Recycled Claim Standard (RCS)?

RCS, also from Textile Exchange, verifies recycled content and chain of custody only. GRS adds social, environmental, and chemical criteria on top of the same content verification, making it the more comprehensive standard where a buyer specifically asks for it.

How much does GRS certification cost in Malaysia?

Cost depends on the number of material types and sites in scope, and how much chain of custody documentation already exists. Certification body fees are quoted separately from consulting fees; we give a written, fixed-scope quote after reviewing your supply chain.

How long does GRS certification take?

Three to five months is typical for a single-site manufacturer with existing recycled sourcing. Companies building chain of custody documentation from scratch, or coordinating with multiple supply chain partners, usually need six to nine months.

How often is GRS certification renewed?

GRS certification is verified through an annual audit, not a multi-year cycle like most ISO standards. BUKTI keeps transaction certificates and mass balance records current between audits so the annual renewal stays routine.
